Meet Mason

Hi!

My name is Mason Shelton, and thanks for visiting my tax preparation site!

I am an Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church Mayfield, Kentucky. So, why is a pastor doing taxes?

Great question.

A high school senior capstone project sparked my interest in accounting. As I progressed through my coursework in Accounting from Murray State University, I fell in love with the craft.

However...

My work as a part-time minister for my home church in Cadiz, KY at the time showed me that I could leave a much deeper impact on this world for the kingdom of God by devoting my life to ministry, than tapping away at spreadsheets.

Ever since then, I have kept my feet in both worlds. In 2019, I began seminary at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky while working at BKD CPA's and Advisors. I opened Capernaum's Coin Tax Service shortly after.

In December 2022, I was called as the Associate Pastor of Administration and Families at FBC Mayfield, KY. The administration piece meant overseeing a $22M reconstruction project after our church was leveled after an EF-4 tornado.

Needless to say, my current role sits at the intersection of salvation and spreadsheets. And I wouldn't want it any other way.

Why "Capernaum's Coin?"

On the shores of Capernaum, Jesus used a simple question about taxes to reveal a profound truth about who He is. He sent His disciple Peter to the water, where a fish would provide—inside its mouth—a coin to pay the temple tax.

This moment pointed forward to the greatest news in the world—that Jesus would one day pay the debt of sinners like you and me when He was nailed to a tree, bearing in our place the wrath we deserved.

As a pastor, I couldn’t help but see the connection between this powerful story in Matthew 17 and my small tax business. And so, Capernaum’s Coin Tax Service was born.

What Working With Us is Like

Experienced

I have been doing tax returns since 2018, both under the supervision of CPAs and my own tax practice. While not a CPA or Enrolled Agent myself, I consult with colleagues should tax questions arise. And of course, every return comes with a team of well-qualified experts should you be audited by the IRS.

Quick

It takes a typical CPA firm weeks to turn your return around. Not me. Within 2-3 days, I'll have completed my first pass and will give you a list of questions and/or additional information to pull together.

Accessible

All of my clients have my personal cell phone number, which you can call or text at any hour. I want to make sure you get the answers you need quick, fast, and in a hurry.
